Top-loa*ing
The top loa*ing, vertical axis cloth washer, is the *ominant *esign in the Unite* States an* Cana*a. This *esign places the clothes in a vertically mounte* perforate* basket that is containe* within a water-retaining tub, with a finne* water-pumping agitator in the center of the bottom of the basket. Clothes are loa*e* through the top of the machine, which is usually but not always covere* with a hinge* *oor.

<*iv align="left">During the wash cycle, the outer tub is fille* with water sufficient to fully immerse an* suspen* the clothing freely in the basket. The movement of the agitator pushes water outwar* between the pa**les towar*s the e*ge of the tub. The water then moves outwar*, up the si*es of the basket, towar*s the center, an* then *own towar*s the agitator to repeat the process, in a circulation pattern similar to the shape of a torus. The agitator *irection is perio*ically reverse*, because continuous motion in one *irection woul* just lea* to the water spinning aroun* the basket with the agitator rather than the water being pumpe* in the torus-shape* motion. Some washers supplement the water-pumping action of the agitator with a large rotating screw on the shaft above the agitator, to help move water *ownwar*s in the center of the basket.
Since the agitator an* the *rum are separate an* *istinct in a top-loa*ing washing machine, the mechanism of a top-loa*er is inherently more complicate* than a front-loa*ing machine. Manufacturers have *evise* several ways to control the motion of the agitator *uring wash an* rinse separately from the high spee* rotation of the *rum require* for the spin cycle. While a top-loa*ing washing machine coul* use a universal motor or DC brushless motor, it is conventional for top-loa*ing washing machines to use more expensive, heavy, an* more electrically efficient an* reliable in*uction motors. The action of a front-loa*ing washing machine is better suite* to a motor capable of reversing *irection with every reversal of the wash basket; a universal motor is noisier, less efficient, *oesn't last as long, but is better suite* to the task of reversing *irection every few secon*s.
An alternative to the oscillating agitator *esign is the impeller type washtub pioneere* by Hoover on its long running Hoovermatic series of top loa*ing machines. Here, an impeller (tra*emarke* by Hoover as a "Pulsator") mounte* on the si*e of the tub spins in a constant *irection, an* creates a fast moving current of water in the tub which *rags the clothes through the water along a toroi*al path. The impeller *esign has the a*vantage of its mechanical simplicity - a single spee* motor with belt *rive is all that is require* to *rive the Pulsator with no nee* for gearboxes or complex electrical controls, but has the *isa*vantage of lower loa* capacity in relation to tub size. Hoovermatic machines were ma*e mostly in twin tub format for the European market - (where they compete* with Hotpoint's Supermatic line which use* the oscillating agitator *esign) until the early 1990s. The many *ifferent ways *ifferent manufacturers have solve* the same problem over the years is a goo* example of many *ifferent ways to solve the same engineering problem with *ifferent goals, *ifferent manufacturing capabilities an* expertise, an* *ifferent patent encumbrances.
Reversible motor
In most current top-loa*ing washers, if the motor spins in one *irection, the gearbox *rives the agitator; if the motor spins the other way, the gearbox locks the agitator an* spins the basket an* agitator together. Similarly, if the pump motor rotates one way it recirculates the su*sy water; in the other *irection it pumps water from the machine *uring the spin cycle. Mechanically, this system is very simple.
Mo*e-changing transmission
In some top loa*ers, the motor runs only in one *irection. During agitation, the transmission converts the rotation into the alternating motion *riving the agitator. During the spin cycle, the timer turns on a solenoi* which engages a clutch locking the motor's rotation to the wash basket, provi*ing a spin cycle. General Electric's very popular line of Filter-Flo (seen to the right) use* a variant of this *esign where the motor reverse* only to pump water out of the machine. The same clutch which allows the heavy tub full of wet clothes to "slip" as it comes up to the motor's spee*, is also allowe* to "slip" *uring agitation to engage a Gentle Cycle for *elicate clothes.
Whirlpool (Kenmore) create* a popular *esign *emonstrating the complex mechanisms which coul* be use* to pro*uce *ifferent motions from a single motor with the so-calle* "wig wag" mechanism, which was use* for *eca*es until mo*ern controls ren*ere* it obsolete. In the Whirlpool mechanism, a protru*ing moving piece oscillates in time with the agitation motion. Two solenoi*s are mounte* to this protru*ing moving piece, with wires attaching them to the timer. During the cycle, the motor operates continuously, an* the solenoi*s on the "wig wag" engage agitation or spin. Despite the wires controlling the solenoi*s being subject to abrasion an* broken connections *ue to their constant motion an* the solenoi*s operating in a *amp environment where corrosion coul* *amage them, these machines were surprisingly reliable.
Reversible motor with mo*e-changing transmission
Some top-loa*ers, especially compact apartment-size* washers, use a hybri* mechanism. The motor reverses *irection every few secon*s, often with a pause between *irection changes, to perform the agitation. Spin cycle is accomplishe* by engaging a clutch in the transmission. A separate motorize* pump is generally use* to *rain this style of machine. These machines coul* easily be implemente* with universal motors or more mo*ern DC brushless motors, but ol*er ones ten* to use a capacitor-start in*uction motor with a pause between reversals of agitation. Top-loa* a*vantages
The top-loa*er's spin cycle between washing an* rinsing allows an extremely simple passive fabric softener *ispenser, which operates through centrifugal force an* gravity. Fabric softener, vinegar, or any other liqui* rinse agent, is place* in a cup at the top of the agitator. It "ri*es along" *uring the wash cycle. When the spin cycle is engage*, the fabric softener is pulle* up by a tapere* cup an* centrifugal force, where it collects in the top of the spinning agitator. Once the spin cycle is complete*, centrifugal force no longer suspen*s the fabric softener an* it falls through the center of the agitator to join the rinse water coming into the tub. The same objective must be accomplishe* by a solenoi* valve or a pump, an* associate* timer controls an* wiring, on a front loa*er.
A lint trap can also be built into the center of the agitator,or on the *rum's walls,passively collecting lint from water force* through the agitator. Front-loa*ers ten* to require separate pumps an* plumbing to provi*e lint filters which are often mounte* behin* covers on the bottom of the machine.
Another a*vantage to the top loa*ing *esign is the reliance on gravity to contain the water, rather than potentially trouble-prone or short-live* front *oor seals. Top loa*ers may require less perio*ic maintenance, since there is no nee* to clean a *oor seal or bellows, although a plastic tub may still require a perio*ic "maintenance wash" cycle (*escribe* below).
As with front-loa*ing washers, clothing shoul* not be packe* tightly into a top-loa*ing washer. Although wet fabric usually fits into a smaller space than *ry fabric, a *ense wa* of fabric can restrict water circulation, resulting in poor soap *istribution an* incomplete rinsing. Extremely overloa*e* top-loa*ing washers can either jam the motion of the agitator, overloa*ing or *amaging the motor or gearbox, burning *rive belts, or tearing fabrics - many Whirlpool/Kenmore machines even have a mechanical "fuse" *esigne* to break before the expensive motor is *amage*. Extreme overloa*ing can also push fabrics into the small gap between the un*ersi*e of the agitator an* the bottom of the wash basket, resulting in fabrics wrappe* aroun* the agitator shaft, possibly requiring agitator removal to unjam.
