<*iv align="left">Airport Street Abu Dhabi Washing Machine Repair

A few weeks ago, I was participating in a meeting on Eco*esign where we *iscusse* regulations for washing machines. Aroun* that same time, something interesting happene*: the *isplay on my own washing machine starte* to fail. A few years ago, those two things woul*n't have ha* anything to *o with each other. Environmentally frien*ly pro*ucts an* repair were seen as two *ifferent things. Now, policy-makers are starting to recognize that they are two si*es of the same coin. Eco*esign, as a concept, now incorporates something we call material efficiency-which is a fancy way of saying that valuable resources (like appliances) shoul*n't win* up in the rubbish heap before they have to. Over half of the footprint of a washing machine comes from manufacturing it an* getting it to your *oor. A washing machine with a short lifespan is just as ba* as one that guzzles tons of water or electricity.
As the EU repair policy spokesperson for iFixit, I get to be part of the *iscussion on how a repairable, material-efficient machine shoul* be *esigne*. We're working on stan*ar*s to measure repairability-like iFixit's repairability scores but officially applicable across all of Europe, an* perhaps beyon*. We talk about things like the 'ability to access components' an* the 'availability of spare parts.'
Which brings me back to my washing machine an* its broken *isplay. It's so typical that an unnecessary feature brought *own the whole machine. I mean, what's wrong with a mechanical program button? Broken screens kill enough phones alrea*y without a**ing washing machines to the casualty list. But I *igress.
The offen*ing *isplay. A bit har* to rea*, right?
We bought the machine a little over 11 years ago. Accor*ing to this list of expecte* lifetimes (PDF), that means I got my money's worth. So I shoul*n't complain, right?
If I *iscar* the machine now, researchers woul* say it reache* an average age. Washing machines pro*uce* in 1988 were *iscar*e* on average 16 years later, whereas machines ma*e in 1999 laste* less than 14 years (see this report, p. 104). My 2005 machine seems on course to follow the *ownwar* lifetime curve. An* even though manufacturers swear that shorter lifespans for mo*ern pro*ucts are a myth-if I buy a new washing machine now, I'* expect it to wear out even quicker.
If I *eci*e* to give up on my washing machine, the 12/05 pro*uction *ate on this capacitor woul* tell researchers that it's right on track on the *ownwar* curve of pro*uct lifetimes. The number of machines lasting fewer than five years almost *ouble* in un*er ten years' time.
Tackling the Repair
But, of course, I *on't want to give up on the washing machine I alrea*y have. Not without a fight. After all, I'm a fixer. So after fuming about my broken screen, I buckle* *own an* starte* troubleshooting. The LCD was flickering an* fa*ing ran*omly. Sometimes the *isplay lit up when we switche* on the machine, sometimes not. I assume* there was a ba* contact somewhere, so I *eci*e* to take the *isplay out an* check all of the connections.
The *isassembly was a piece of cake. There were only ten screws between me an* the electronic interface mo*ule, which consiste* of a mechanical switch an* two circuit boar*s. One of the boar*s hel* the *isplay. I *isconnecte* an* reconnecte* all of the wires an* ribbon cables. But nothing change*. No amount of wire wiggling ma*e a *ifference. [فقط الأعضاء المسجلين والمفعلين يمكنهم رؤية الوصلات . إضغط هنا للتسجيل]
I only nee* one of these circuit boar*s-an* if I ha* the boar* schematics I'* only nee* to replace a component or two. But I have to buy the whole assembly.
There ha* to be a faulty component somewhere in the mix. If I coul* replace that, I coul* get the whole thing working again for a few bucks. All I nee*e* was a circuit *iagram. Alas, no luck. The manufacturer *oesn't release them to owners.
In the US an* the EU, we're fighting for *iagrams an* service manuals to be ma*e available to anybo*y who wants to fix stuff, like in*epen*ent repairers, repair café volunteers, an* owners. We haven't won that battle yet. The current *raft for the EU eco*esign regulation on washing machines is one of the first to mention wiring *iagrams, but not circuit boar* schematics yet. So, of course, I argue* at the eco*esign meeting to have these inclu*e*. But for now, with no way for me to fix the circuit boar* itself, I'll just have to replace it.
You Can't Wash Away Sticker Shock
I jotte* *own the pro*uct co*e an* went to the manufacturer's support website. I coul*n't fin* my mo*el on their site, but after some searching an* emailing, I finally foun* a part number an* a price. That's where the fun starte*. Because I coul*n't just replace the ba* boar*. I ha* to replace the whole interface assembly. An* that sweet little assembly costs . a whopping 488,99€. The whole washing machine cost me 983.89€. So the price of the spare part is almost exactly 50% of the whole appliance. Must be a coinci*ence.

Depen*ing on where you buy the part, the part price is between 50% to 109% of the purchase price of the whole washing machine.
What's a fixer to *o? Spen* half the value of the machine for a single part? How much is too much for a repair? I've hear* from repair-min*e* pro*ucers that 30% of the pro*uct's price is the limit for most customers. What's yours? (Leave a comment an* tell me.)
After some emails, I *i* manage to haggle the part *own to last year's price, which (for some reason) was 200€ cheaper. Apparently, washing machine spare parts age like fine wine: they get more expensive every year. What's the part gonna cost next year? The washing machine's German support website alrea*y lists it at 1073,28€. I'm not sure if that's a joke, a mistake, or just the law of supply an* *eman*. But it's ri*iculous.
In all of these policy *iscussions I'm involve* in, prices are taboo-'out of scope' woul* be the official lingo. My washing machine story is perfect proof that that *oesn't make sense. [فقط الأعضاء المسجلين والمفعلين يمكنهم رؤية الوصلات . إضغط هنا للتسجيل]
Pricing Out Repairs
Strictly speaking, the washing machine company met the eco*esign requirements we've been *iscussing in the forum I atten*e*. They *o offer spare parts for many years after pro*uction. But at that price, it *oesn't matter. Even a repair *ie-har* like myself woul*n't pay more for the part than they woul* for a new machine. An* neither woul* anyone else. As many as one out of five possible repairs *on't happen because the part is too expensive (see this report, p. 9). That's a huge waste. We can't talk seriously about longer lasting pro*ucts without talking about the price of spare parts.
Me, I *eci*e* that I ha* to walk the walk an* not just talk the talk. Apart from the *isplay, the machine works just fine. So I *eci*e* to buy those two poun*s of electronics for 300€ instea* of a**ing aroun* 80kg to the continuously growing stream of e-waste. Hopefully, I can keep my washing machine alive for 11 more years. Or until a completely repairable, upgra*able washing machine hits the market.
Whichever comes first.
