Washing machine nee* repair? Troubleshoot an* fix common clothes washer problems with this expert DIY a*vice. Inclu*es step-by-step instructions for a washer that *oesn't run, rinse, fill, or spin. Inclu*es washing machine leaks, a shaking washer, an* more.
A washing machine is basically a big tub that repeate*ly fills with water an* then *rains, spins to wring clothes *ry, an* has a *evice for stirring the contents up-either an agitator in the mi**le of a top-loa* machine or a rolling *rum in a front-loa*ing machine.
The four cycles that every washer performs are fill, wash, *rain, an* spin. Though these functions are pretty basic, a number of things can go wrong with them.
You can fix a number of problems quite simply. Some issues, however, are better left in the han*s of an appliance repair person. Before working on a washing machine, be sure to unplug it. A front-loa*ing washer must be empty before you can open the *oor to work on it.
Washing Machine Does Not Run
If the washer *oesn't *o anything-in other wor*s, it *oesn't operate or make any noise when set on any cycle, it may not be receiving electrical power.
If it stoppe* when it shoul* have continue* on to the next cycle, the machine's overloa* protector may have trippe*. In this case, take out some of the articles to re*uce the loa* an* let the protector reset itself. Then restart the machine. (In some cases, it may be necessary to unplug the washer an* then plug it back in to reset it.)
Otherwise:
1 Be sure the machine is plugge* in an* turne* on. If necessary, check the receptacle it's plugge* into for power, using a working lamp, appliance, or voltage tester. Be sure the washer li* is close* completely.
2 If the receptacle seems *ea*, check the circuit breaker or the fuse that serves it.
3 Check the power cor*. Unplug the washer an* check its cor* for a break or fraye* area. If necessary, replace the cor*.
4 Open the li* an* check the li* switch an* the tab on the li* that it pushes against. Press an* release the switch. If it *oesn't click when you *o this, it's probably broken. Remove the switch, test it, an* replace it if nee*e*.
5 If the washer still *oesn't work, the controls may be faulty. Call an appliance repair person.
Home Tips Pro Tip: To prevent problems with your washing machine, follow goo* maintenance proce*ures. Use the right amount of *etergent for your washer an* your water har*ness, make sure the machine is level, an* *on't overloa* it.
Washing Machine Does Not Rinse Correctly
If resi*ue remains on your clothes or in the washing machine following a cycle, the problem may have any of several causes.
First, make sure you're using the machine properly. In other wor*s, put the right amount of soap in the loa*, *on't overloa* the machine, an* so forth. Check your owner's manual for this information. Just an overly bulky loa* can cause improper rinsing.
If these types of issues are not causing the problem, the chances are goo* that the rinse water is not getting into the *rum or is not *raining out properly.
1 Check the supply valves. Make sure the water supply valves that serve the supply hoses are open all the way.
2 Make sure the supply hoses are not kinke*.
3 Check the *rain hose to make sure the machine is *raining fully. A blockage can cause *irty rinse water to back up an* remain in the *rum. When you run a loa*, watch the machine to make sure it empties completely after each wash an* rinse cycle.
4 Check to make sure the col* water supply hose isn't blocke*. Turn off the valve to the hose, an* then *isconnect it from the machine. Put the en* into a bucket an* turn the faucet back on. It shoul* *eliver a strong flow. If it *oesn't, the hose may be partially obstructe*. To *etermine if it is, *isconnect the en* from the valve, screw it onto a hose bibb out*oors, an* try again. If the flow is still constricte*, either clear or replace the hose.
5 If these measures *on't work, call a washing machine repair person.

Washing Machine Leaks
Leaking water from a washing machine usually comes from hoses or connections. Be sure that water appearing to be a leak isn't *rain water from a backe*-up stan*pipe. To prevent potential floo* *amage, which can occur if washing machine supply hoses burst, be sure to install "no-burst" stainless-steel mesh hoses an* lever-type shutoff valves, as shown here.
1 Check the fittings where the hoses connect to the faucets an* to the back of the washing machine. Also look for worn or leaky hoses. Tighten couplings or hose clamps if nee*e*, or replace the hoses altogether. Be sure to turn the water off before removing the hoses, an* then *rain them into a bucket after *isconnecting them.
2 Determine whether the machine is over-su*sing, which can cause it to overflow. Re*uce su*s by pouring in 1/2 cup white vinegar in 1 quart water. Then switch to either less *etergent or to a low-su*sing variety.
3 Check seals an* bearings. The machine may have a faulty basket gasket or tub seal an* bearing that must be replace*; in this case, call an appliance repair person.
Washing Machine Has Fill Problems
If both hot an* col* water seem to be entering the washer with goo* pressure, water may be *raining out prematurely *uring the fill cycle through siphoning action. Be sure the *rain hose's connection to the stan*pipe is at least 34 inches above the floor (otherwise, *iscuss the problem with a plumber). An air gap between the *rain hose an* stan*pipe that prevents backflow is also goo* to have.
Another reason for the washer not filling may be that the water-level switch, timer, or temperature selector is broken.
If your washer is overfilling, you may have a *efective water-inlet valve or water-level switch.
A broken water-inlet valve will often cause water to leak into the clothes tub. A faulty water-level switch cannot *etect the correct water level in the tub an* signal the water to turn off, resulting in overflow.
These repairs are best han*le* by an appliance repair person
Washing Machine Shakes or Vibrates
In most cases, a washing machine shakes or vibrates when it isn't sitting level on the floor or because it has an out-of-balance wash loa*. Here's how to get it to settle *own!
First eliminate the possibility of that the washing machine is shaking because of an out-of-balance loa*. A*just the loa* if it has scrunche* up on one si*e of the tub. Then check the machine for soli*, level support.
Also be sure the floor is soli*. For the machine to work properly, the floor must be flat, level, an* strong enough to support the heavy, water-fille* washer without *eflecting un*er the loa*.
1 Unplug the washer before *oing any work on it.
2 Check the leveling feet. Look un*er the washer an* make sure all feet are resting firmly on the floor. If one or both of the front feet are not tight against the floor, unscrew them (turn counterclockwise) until they're tight. Note: The front feet shoul* be as short as possible-*o not fully exten* them. Place a level on top of the washing machine an* a*just the front feet slightly if nee*e* to level the washer..
3 Make sure the front legs have rubber caps an* locking nuts to keep them tight. If they *on't, buy these parts an* install them. Note: You can buy anti-vibration pa*s to put un*er the feet-these help a lot (see below).
4 If necessary, tilt the washing machine forwar*. This will allow the back feet to self-a*just. Recheck for level, an* a*just the front feet again. Plug in the machine an* run it empty.
Run it through the spin cycle to see if it still vibrates. [فقط الأعضاء المسجلين والمفعلين يمكنهم رؤية الوصلات . إضغط هنا للتسجيل]
